Vivid2015 – what I learned from the ‘gamechangers’

Vivid 2015 gamechangers

Oh my. What a busy few weeks. I missed a post last Sunday (oopsy) but I was just too busy snuggling and snapping my new nephew who finally turned up. Not only that, I’ve been out and about with Vivid quite a bit, as is always the way at this time of year.

This year I’ve taken in more of the Vivid Ideas program. A couple of months ago I had an email pop up flagging the ‘Game Changers’ series and, after a passing glance at the line up …

… it was buy buy BUY!

I thought this week I’d recap some of the things that struck a chord for me at the talks. Do you take notes at talks like this? I was certainly in the minority at this series – there was hardly anyone taking notes. I felt like a bit of a dick actually … but I’ve grown pretty used to feeling that way so what-evaaaa.

I’ve taken snaps from my moleskine and, even though some of it is messy as shit, I really love process so I wanted to find a way to share them in their natural state. I’ll apologise now for the final two – the Sagmeister venue was so dark I could hardly see the page. Like literally, I had to feel the edge of it with one hand so I didn’t draw on myself. How dumbass is that? So rather than you try and interpret my hieroglyphics, I’ve transcribed them to text as well.

What do you think – do any of these strike a chord with you as well?

    • Oh wow Liz, that’s SO true! Now that you mention it, I can totally hear Don saying that. He’s the king of the pause and that phrase is built for pausing. Matthew Weiner was awesome, so funny. I like it as well because I just substitute ‘shoot’ wherever he said ‘write’ and it works for me too. I’m just about to hop over and have a look at your tweed ride 🙂

  1. I loved this post so much. I love those lovely little notes you made (and I too am one that makes notes wherever I go), each one powerful and poignant. I heard an interview with Tyler Brule on Radio National last week and he was such a down to earth person. Thanks you for sharing xx

    • Thanks Karen. I envisage that most of the BWP gang would be of the notetaking persuasion. It was definitely interesting to see so few (esp in a crowd of designers, writers, journos etc) with their pens out. Oh yes, Matthew Weiner was the goods.

  2. Amazing! I love how you did that, it looks so cool! Haha, you definitely ignored what the rest of the room was doing by taking notes while most people didn’t 😉 and I am so glad you did. The quote about obsession is amazing. Gonna have to write that one down. Thank you!

    • It was good to do something with the info … and get them off the pages where they normally stay fixed. of course there’s nothing wrong with that, good for inspiration mining at later date. But marking the occasion feels good. And something about releasing it back to the world gives it longer legs. Ok get me more coffee. too many early starts this week. the thoughts are there but the words are not. I’m sure you’ll know what i mean.

  3. Wow Rachael, I needed to read this today. I have been questioning myself but these quotes really made me get back to what is true to me. And yep, I take a beautiful notebook to every conference I go to. So old school. xx
